Before insulation is added to your attic, you need to know how much insulation is you already have. To do this, determine how thick your insulation is, which tells us its R-Value. Older homes have between 3" and 6" of fiberglass blanket or blown insulation. This is about an R-value of R-9 to R-19. The US Department of Energy Suggests that in attics in the Fredericksburg and surrounding area that you use R-49 in attics. Now subtract the amount of your attic's existing insulation from R-49.

Fiberglass insulation can help keep a finished attic
comfortable all year. R-38 and above is recommended for this
job. R-38 is a special
high-density product that is designed to maintain proper heating
and cooling throughout the year between the insulation and roof
deck. Rafters and Collar Beams | R-21 | | Fiber Glass Insulation | | 5 1/2" Thick | R-19 | | Fiber Glass Insulation | | 6 1/4" Thick | R-38 | | 2 x 12 Cathedral Ceiling Fiber Glass

The rafters in cathedral ceilings are usually
made of 2x12s or 2x10s. When we batt these types of
ceilings, we use an R-Value between R-19 to R-38, depending upon
framing applications

Your exterior walls will be 2x6 or 2x4 studs. 2x6 stud walls allow for more insulation because of their extra depth. When we insulate 2x6 framing, we use R-19, R-21, and R-22 where available. For 2x4 framing, we use R-13 fiberglass batt insulation or R-15 high-density batts.

In a conditioned basement, only the walls need to be insulated, also the ceiling can be insulated also for sound control proposes. Before insulating a basement, all walls are checked for water leaks, if leaks are apparent, we suggest that you call in a basement waterproofer prior to insulation, to prevent future damage. To insulate this kind of basement: We use Basement Wall Finishing System, which requires no additional paneling or drywall.
